Hippie love from across the ages

almostfamousGrowing up in the cursed age of Almost Famous, wishing endlessly to have grown up in the true 70’s, makes me constantly want to read and see more about life as a hippie. This post on Boing Boing about groupies reminds me that 1) I have to find this full documentary somehow and 2) I keep meaning to pick up the book “Girls Like Us” by Sheila Weller, a three-part biography on Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and Carly Simon and the highs and lows of being a female musical influence in the 70’s.

I read “Wonderful Tonight” by Pattie Boyd, the lover of both George Harrison and Eric Clapton but had to put it down because, no matter how magically rock and roll your story is, it’s still better to leave the writing to the writer. Pattie’s writing fell flat where so many scene could have come to roaring life if the right writer had done the job.
